スクエアダンス（略して
ＳＤ）は、アメリカ西部開拓時代に生まれ、８人がマスゲームの様に一体と為って、カントリー＆ウエスタンのメロディに乗って踊るさわやかな踊りです。

エアダンスの起源
１７世紀初期にヨーロッパからアメリカに移住した人々が自国のコントラダンスやカドリールを
変化させてスクエアダンスを作り上げたのが元祖と言われています。
この古い伝統的なスクエアダンスが戦後約１０年の間に意外性と都会的センスを加味したモダン・スクエアダンスに改良されて現在に至っています。
どこ
で踊られているか
アメリカ、カナダ、イギリス、フランス、ドイツ、
オランダ、スウェーデン、オーストラリア、ニュージーランド、シンガポール、台湾、韓国、日本などで踊られています。
本場アメリカでは３５００万人、日本では全国で２７０団体８６００名（平成１１年度現在）の愛好者がいます。
どこ
の国でも踊れます
世界中のどこの国でスクエアダンスを習っても、どこの国でも踊れ
るようにスクエアダンスの基本動作を共通で教えるように国際スクエアダンス・コーラーズ協会（ＣＡＬＬＥＲＬＡＢ）で定めています。日本のスクエアダンスは同協会の定めた講習プログラムに
基づき指導されていますので何処の国へ行っても踊れます。

アメリカ合衆国南部の民族音楽が商業主義（レコー
ド、ラジオ、ショウ）によって変化して行き、モダンなカントリー（田舎）音楽となったもの。

ントラダンス
向かい合った２列の長いラインの形で
踊るダンスで、その始まりは１４世紀の中頃と言われている。
カ
ドリール
ヨーロッパで、上流階級の舞踊会で流
行したダンスで、一般的に宮廷舞踊と呼ばれている。
